Democrats Reject DHS Funding Extension, Raising Shutdown Risk

(MENAFN) Democratic lawmakers are declining to approve another short-term extension to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a decision that could result in a shutdown of the agency by Friday, according to reports.

As stated by reports, Democrats argue that lawmakers still have several days to finalize a comprehensive funding package for the remainder of the fiscal year. They are pushing for the inclusion of measures that would curb certain immigration enforcement practices and contend that postponing the current deadline would weaken the pressure needed to secure a broader agreement.

“I’m just not right now prepared to give them more money without reform,” Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said.

Echoing that stance, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto said, “The Republicans need to provide a serious counterproposal,” adding that Democrats “don’t need” a short-term funding bill.

On the other side, Republican lawmakers maintain that a brief two-week extension beyond the January 30 cutoff would be insufficient to bridge ongoing disagreements, particularly those centered on immigration enforcement. Despite Democratic calls for a temporary measure, Republicans argue that more time and negotiation are necessary to reach a lasting compromise.

“The Democrats took the better part of a week and a half to get their proposal in. And now the White House has reacted to it, responded and submitted a counterproposal, which the Democrats are evaluating,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, South Dakota Republican, citing that as “progress.”

The funding legislation in question covers agencies such as US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection, both central to President Trump’s deportation initiatives. Democrats are seeking significant changes to how those operations are conducted.

A senior administration official said the White House remains engaged in “constructive conversations” with lawmakers from both political parties as the deadline approaches.
